SSC CHSL Typing Test 2018 – Staff Selection Commission conducts Combined Higher Secondary Level exam to recruit Data Entry Operator (DEO), Postal Assistant(PA)/Sorting Assistant(SA), Court Clerk and LDC(Lower Division Clerk) in various ministry and its subordinate offices. Typing test is widely known as Skill test for Data Entry Operator (DEO).
All these four posts are clerical jobs, it means you are expected to have good typing speed to get the work done in lesser time and greater efficiency. Hence, in this article we are going to discuss how much speed and number of words your need to type per minute to score good marks.
SSC CHSL Typing Test 2018
Lets understand what is typing test and what to expect in skill test. Data entry operator candidates will be called for Skill Test whereas Typing test will conducted for Lower Divisional Clerk, Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant and Court Clerk.
There are few rules which candidates needs to follow during or before the typing test. Lets have look at them one by one.
- You can press backspace during typing test. It is allowed.
- But there is limitation on errors you are making, it means candidates can not exceed the errors to a certain percentage which is fixed by SSC.
- The percentage error limit for both the posts is 5% to 7%.
- You will get passage 2 minutes before the start of the Typing test.
- There will be a total of three passage in the typing test After you change paragraph you must use TAB for three space instead of THREE white space.
- Keyboard keys that they provide have soft keys if you have any problem with the keyboard or the system that they have provided you can ask invigilator to change the keyboard.
You will go through the documents verification and for that, you must carry mark sheet and passing certificate of 10th and 12th class with xerox copy and 2 passport size photograph.
Pattern of Typing Test 2018
Medium of Exam: English or Hindi (candidates need to choose medium while filling application form)
Nature of Exam: Qualifying in Nature
Exam Mode: Computer based exam
Total Time: 10 Minutes, but Visually Handicapped candidates (with 40% disability and above) will be allowed 30 minutes
Speed Test in English:
Lower Division Clerk: 10 min (35 wpm or 1750 depression)
Data Entry Operator: 15 min (27 wpm or 2000 depression)
Speed Test in Hindi:
Lower Division Clerk: 10 min (30 wpm or 1500 depression)
Note: Your speed will be adjusted based on errors you are making. If you forget to opt for medium then it will be sat to English by default.
Skill Test: A speed test of not less than 15000 key depressions per hour for data entry work to be ascertained through speed test on computer.

Type of Errors/Mistakes
There are two type of mistakes 1. Full Mistakes and 2. Half Mistake.
Lets discuss each in detail.
- For every omission of word/ figure.
- Every substitution of a wrong word.
- Every addition of a word not found in the passage.
- Spacing Errors
- Spelling Errors
- Wrong Capitalization
Relaxation allowed to VH/OH?
All the VH/OH (afflicted by Cerebral Palsy) and OH with deformity in writing hand (with 40% disability and above) will get 35 minutes(20 minutes extra) for the skill test.
Note: Physically handicapped candidates are not exempted from the Skill Test as passing of the skill test is a precondition and essential qualifications for appointment to the post of Data Entry Operator.
